The History of the French e-trike

Faced with environmental challenges, the use of delivery tricycles in towns and cities is on the rise. This new delivery method is part of an eco-delivery approach.

HOW HAVE E-TRIKES ESTABLISHED THEMSELVES AS A NEW FORM OF MOBILITY IN CITY CENTRES?

The first tricycles

The first tricycles appeared in the 1820s. The first "industrial" model of tricycle was made in England by James Strarley. At the time, tricycles were made for leisure use, but not yet for business travel. From 1870 onwards, the tricycle was used to transport workers. In 1890, firefighters used them to get around. The first tricycle-carrier, the three-wheeler, appeared at this time. It had pedals. It was used in commerce, but its use remained complicated and restricted by the fact that towns had to be paved.

Interest from major French companies

In October 1899, the Under-Secretary of State for the Post Office, Léon Mougeot announced in the magazine Touring Club de France that he wanted to use a three-wheeled vehicle to transport mail. This was not a tricycle but a triporteur, with a drive wheel at the rear, two steered wheels at the front and a central boot that could hold 20 to 25 kilos. The three-wheeler then found its place in urban logistics. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first professional production models appeared, such as the Hirondelle, manufactured by the Manufacture d'armes et de cycles de Saint-Étienne. The Hirondelle e-trike was designed to carry a load of 50 to 100 kilos and travel at a speed of 12 to 15 kilometres per hour. Models were available with an open body, a closed body and even a varnished wooden body. In the 1950s, Casino decided to set up home deliveries using couriers on delivery tricycles. This was the invention of the ship-from-store concept. During this decade, Jacques Pinoteau directed Le Triporteur, which helped the concept to take off. At the time, delivery tricycles were being used in town centres by bakers and food shops. Casino decided to set up home deliveries using couriers on delivery tricycles. The VUF E-TRIKES VUF

To continue the innovations introduced by James Starley, Léon Mougeot, and by developing Casino delivery by tricycle, is following in the footsteps of these tricycle pioneers. The advantages of the VUF delivery e-trikes VUF lie in its ease of travel. It's an economical means of mobility, particularly suited to the narrow streets of city centres. The VUF electrically-assisted e-trike VUF is ideal for a range of logistics services, such as delivering mail, parcels and home shopping. Other options can of course be explored depending on individual needs. Take a look at all our electrically assisted cargo bikes!
